Maximum shear modulus of a Brazilian lateritic soil from in situ and laboratory tests

A lateritic soil in Santo André investigated with SPT-T, crosshole, SDMT, CPTu and laboratory tests for the foundation design of a building. The maximum shear modulus obtained showed stiffness well above what correlations developed for temperate-zone soils would predict.

Predicted and measured behavior of a tall building in a lateritic clay

In Duque de Caxias, driven precast piles stopped far shallower than expected, with their tips bearing on soil of only 4 to 8 SPT blows. Dynamic monitoring, static load tests and SPT-T, CPTu and DMT testing explain the behaviour, traced to two geological faults.
